Its Just Like Christmas
Tonight we spent a few hours talking to Muslims about Eid al-Adha. They were handing out brochures about it on the street so we asked them about it. The first explanation was "It's just like Christmas, a big day when Muslims get together to pray and be with family". Its the Festival of Sacrifice and I suggest you google it rather than I write an inadequate summary. The funny thing was that the brochure had two days on it and said that the correct day will be advised closer to the date. Apparently they had to decide between Meccan time or Bengali time.
I realised that if I knew little about Eid al-Adha that Muslims probably have little understanding of Christmas. Also that the ones we talked to thought sacrifice was about obedience and nothing to do with forgiveness through the shedding of blood. Some difficult ideas to communicate but worth contemplation.
Well "happy Eid al-Adha". Speak to a Muslim friend today and ask them about this festival. Better still find somewhere it is being celebrated and share the experience so you can understand more this faith.
